Live Blogging Media ‘08: Kevin Anderson

Thursday, March 6th, 2008

Kevin is the Head of Blogging and Interaction, The Guardian (London). He spoke really fast — I did my best!

Great presentation on the ways in which Old Media doesn’t get it and appropriate ways to tap into the new model.

Social media faux pas: focus on celebrity not engagement, not know the difference between provocative and thought provoking, focus on network of free labor rather than relationships

Do you want your pub to be Cheers where everybody knows your name, or the Sky News Inn, filled with naked aggression?

If you build a boxing ring, people are going to fight — Tom Steinberg

Connection, not just crowd-sourcing.

The old model: publisher creates content, audience reads content and reacts.

The new model: Showed a slide from Microcontent News demonstrating the interactivity of the current model.

The User Engagement cycle:

  1. Casual (bookmarking, tagging, adding to group, attention data)
  2. Connected (commenting, rating, voting, endorsing)
  3. Committed (UGC, SOulmates, tools for content & users, social site skills, profiles)
  4. Catalyst (networking tools, blogging tools, networked journalism)

Social media editorial strategies: open up to audience, involved the audience, tap into the wisdom

Showed how he used Seesmic to get some video response about what people think about the US elections — I’ve got to get on Seesmic.

Got information from people all over the world within half an hour from his desk in London.

There’s a poverty of riches - the technological challenges aren’t that big; the cultural challenges are.

Live Blogging Media ‘08: David Kirk

Thursday, March 6th, 2008

In Sydney for the Fairfax Digital Media ‘08 conference. I got twigged to this by Laural Papworth of Silkcharm Blogspot (she’s here too, somewhere, but I haven’t caught up with her yet), and couldn’t pass up the opportunity to hear speakers from the BBC, Al Jazeera, and, most importantl, Richard MacManus of R/WW fame.

I’ll doing my best to film this as well, and I think I’ll have some success later in the day, but I’m going to have to find a different seat so my camera doesn’t look directly into the spotlight.

David KirkFirst speaker is David Kirk, who’s got an outstanding business resume but who will impress my boyfriend most because of his tenure as captain of the New Zealand All Blacks, the national rugby team. He hasn’t been invited to speak about rugby, though; he’s actually the CEO of Fairfax Media Limited, and clearly gets the importance of staying ahead of the curve when it comes to the shift from Old Media to digital.

David’s four criteria for developing into a leading multimedia company:

  1. Content unrivalled capability in digital content origination and aggregation
  2. Powerful multimedia brands extending audience reach
  3. Distributing and promoting content across multiple platforms
  4. Proven new media revenue models

Great line about the way in which marketers are having to chase audiences and audiences get to choose whether they see your ads: “Put brands in front of people where they want it, when they want it, and how they want it.”

Fundaments of success for media companies of any medium:

  1. Compelling content creation every minute, every hour, every day
  2. Innovative, creative advertising and content sales
  3. Reader, viewer, listener, community — audience - connection and management
  4. Production and distribution excellence
  5. People development, leadership and support

Will keep posting as quick as I can!
